The Society was established in 1981 as the ‘friends’ body to support and assist the Grosvenor Museum, Chester, www.westcheshiremuseums.co.uk  and to promote its use and enjoyment by the public.  It is a registered charity with the Duchess of Westminster as its President.

Members of the Society enjoy their own varied programme of lectures, social and educational events, visits and weekend tours – see EVENTS.  We raise money from these events, subscriptions donations and bequests to assist the development of the Museum.

The Museum houses nationally important collections of Roman carvings and artefacts and Chester silver, also an art gallery, natural history gallery, and period rooms.  It runs a diverse programme of exhibitions and a successful education service for schools and families.  The Society contributes to all these functions and has given over £100,000 towards purchase of 180 objects, including paintings, silver and other works of art, and conservation framing and display of the collection.

The Museum Keeper of Art Peter Boughton says “The Grosvenor Museum Society has played a truly crucial role in the development of the Museum’s collection since its establishment in 1981.  I am profoundly grateful for that support”
